Hi Everyone.l have worn glasses for twenty years and tried contact lenses a long time ago but couldnt tolerate them on the grounds of comfort. My Optometrist has suggested a pair of Silicone Hydrogel lenses which will work better with my dry eyes.

Whilst they dont seem to be drying out, they are quite uncomfortable around the edges! They are a Toric lens so not sure if this is the issue also as they are very thick.l really wanna wear them successfully does anyone have any advice etc?Ive tried comfort drops called Blink but they only relieve the symptoms for a short while?

Thanks guys!

Thanks Very much for the comprehensive answer Hillbert will do all you suggest. they are the contact lens blink. Thanks again!!

Long story short:
- Yes, silicone hydrogel (SiH) lenses r better for dry eyes. (They're actually better for all eyes, because they 'breathe' better, letting oxygen get to ur eyes & keeping things healthy.)
- Artificial tears (aka lubricating drops or comfort drops) typically only relieve symptoms for a few minutes (usually 5-10min, up to maybe an hour max), & can actually make things more irritated if u use it more than 8 or so times per day. Blink is a good one; r u using the regular Blink or the one specifically for contact lenses?
- Toric contact lenses r always thicker than spherical (non-toric) ones.
- There r about five different SiH lenses on the market (depending where u live), but only a couple of them r available in toric forms. This limits ur options, obviously. However, new ones r being developed, so even if nothing works perfectly now, if u ask ur optometrist again in six months, there is probably something new u could try.
- Usually when u can feel the lenses (the edge thickness thing u say you're feeling) it is not so much the actual thickness of the lens, but it is the fact that the lens is a little too stiff/rigid & is not comforming perfectly to the shape of ur eye. There r two reasons for that -- one, the material from that brand of lens is very stiff (for example, PureVision brand toric lenses), or two, the lens does not fit ur eye perfectly (which is usually because, although ur optometrist can measure ur eye & tell exactly what shape & size the lenses should be, there r not as many options for those exact dimensions in commercially mass-produced lenses.)

In any case, I'd go check with the optometrist, or at least call their office, & see if they can double-check the fit, and/or have another brand of lenses u can try.

It is most likely the brand of contact. l had to go back to my optomistrist three times & try out three different lenses because l just could not find the right fit. But thankfully l got asked how l cleaned my contacts, & once l changed how l did the process that really made a difference on how the contacts felt in my eyes. So l am back to the original brand that l had.

Basically the correct way of cleaning contacts is this:
-With clean hands, place one contact in ur left hand ( l am guessing you're right handed)
-Put two or three drops of contact solution on the lens
-With the index finger of ur right hand, rub the lens back & forth for 5 seconds
-Rinse the lens
-Repeat the process on the other side of the lens & for the second contact

^^ That is what l did not do. If you're not cleaning ur contacts this way then it is time to change & it could make all the difference.
