l have been laid off from my last two jobs....l am an engineer and am currently doing a job search. My career requires me to use my eyes all the time, and it has just dawned on me that the lack of vision in both eyes is what is holding me back and slowing me down. l do not wanna let a prospective employer know this for fear of discrimination (nobody wants to hire damaged goods). This ailment is not considered a real disability by the powers that be, so l am not sure what l should do. To put it in perspective, a correlation to me would be a carpenter with one good arm. The carpenter can still work but not get as much done. An employer hiring the carpenter would probably pay him less. l can not afford to be paid less than the average engineer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Seriously go to ada.gov, it is the americans with disabilities act website. It tells all about having a job with a disability and you can see if what your employers did to you was illegal. Check it out, it may help!

Legally, that is not a disability -- at least, not in any country that l know of. As long as you've got one good eye that sees well, you're considered to have normal vision. (Certain fields, like police & pilots, have more strict guidelines, but even to drive or whatever, you'd be fine.) l tend to agree; I've seen enough patients who were adults & had grown up fine for twenty or thirty years without ever knowing they had a lazy eye, that l know u can do pretty well with only one eye.
That being said, it does not mean that u can not have a harder time doing things. Probably the worst thing is the difference in focusing between computers & papers, & going back & forth quickly; the way the brain is wired, it is easier to refocus if both eyes r contributing. There r some exercises & things for this that r not particularly effective; frankly, you're better off either wearing 'computer glasses' (if u need them) or just being careful to take frequent breaks from those visually demanding tasks like paperwork. (A good rule of thumb is the 20-20 rule -- take a 20 second break every twenty minutes to let ur eyes refocus & relax.)
Anyhow, best thing to do is probably bring the issue up the next time you're at the eye doctor is office & see what they think -- they will know ur eyes a lot better than l do! Even if ur actual vision can not be improved, there r often ways that we can help u use ur vision more comfortably & effectively to do what u need to.

so if you're legally blind, l guess that means that ur eye sight is worse than 20/200 with the best possible correction lenses. wow, that is really bad. but there is still hope.
to improve ur vision u can buy the vision improvement programs on the internet, but if you're afraid that it might be a scam(which it could be), l would say try the bates method. this is eye relaxation exercises such as palming, sunning, swinging & other methods. if you're interested in the bates method, l would recommend u to this site effortlessvision.com . u can go on the vision forum on this site & learn the bates method from others who r also using it. & if u have any questions, u can ask on the forum. l think this is a very valuable site if you're trying to improve ur vision.
