If someone is very nearsighted in one eye (-3) but not so much in the other (-1.50) would they need to wear their glasses all the time because of the difference? What would the side effects be if they didn't?

Being that nearsighted, u will find that u may need ur glasses for any distances beyond arms length. But when reading, u already have the built in mechanism for allowing them to focus up close without needing the glasses. So u may find that they r useful for driving, watching television & amazingly even clearing up the screen at the movies. There wo not be any side affects other than ur eyes may tire more easily & become fatigued from straining to see things that r blurry. Most likely, u r restricted on ur driver is license but if one eye is a -1.50, u may ''squeak'' through without them when reading their eye chart. Good luck!

l wear my glasses all the time and have since 1st grade, l am 14 now and have since acquired somewhat of a nerd status though :-( because my eyes are both so dramatically different. 1 eye REALLY SUCKS and the other sucks but not nearly as much.

Do not use the word ''very'' to describe a minus 3. It is not very strong at all. Ask people who have minus 8 or more.
For ur question, it would be foolish to go out of ur way to get a headache from eye strain. You stated: ''their glasses''. If they have glasses from an eye doctor, it is understood that one lens corrects for the -3 & the other lens corrects for the -1.50. With that said & the amount of discrepancy between the two, glasses on: no headaches/eye strain - glasses off: headaches/eye strain.
If this is a VANITY issue, people look less attractive squinting all the time than with glasses. Or they seem more in their own little world than usual because they can not observe or comment on the world around them.
Get contacts & be done with it.

This really depends on the individual is comfort level with blurred vision & how well the brain can fuse two different images together.
My right eye has normal vision & my left eye is plano -1.50 axis 50. Astigmatism blurs vision at all distances so everything viewed with my left eye is a little blurry & missing some detail.
l am comfortable performing near tasks without wearing my eyeglasses or contact lens. l am using the computer right now without them, but if l decide to watch the TV that is about 8 ft away from me or drive l choose to wear eyeglasses/contacts. If l look out into the distance without correcting my vision, l will see a clear image & a blurry image which will sometimes result in a nasty headache because my brain has trouble processing the two images. l also have depth perception problems when my vision is uncorrected.
l was able to go without correcting my vision for several years. l was prescribed eyeglasses when l was in my teens & did not start wearing corrective lenses until l was around 30 years when my right eyestarted having difficulty compensating for my left eye & started having the problems described in the above paragraph.
If l had that prescription. l would wear them for activites requiring good distance vision, but would have to see how well l could perform near activities without correction before l would decide if l wanted to wear them for near work.

Well, for one you probably could not see a darn thing without your glasses. Two, it is likely that the weaker eye at -3.00 will become weaker still, which is not a good thing. Wear the glasses.

You can really wear them as much as u like but u should always wear them for driving. l have -2 & -3 & now l wear contact lenses & have great vision. l did not wear glasses much (till l got contacts & my prescription went up) but now when l do not wear my contacts l really miss being able to see 20/20. You'd be able to read, although u may get a headache after a while from the different focus l know l did, but watching tv or movies & generally seeing most things at a distance would not be very sharp. If u did not wear them you'd probably just get a headache but u would not go blind.
