Orthoptics
Orthoptics is a medical term for the eye muscle training programs provided by orthoptists & optometrists. Vision therapy programs include orthoptics, but, technically there r broad distinctions between vision therapy & orthoptics. Orthoptics, which literally means ''straightening of the eyes,'' dates back to the 1850s & is limited in scope to eye-muscle training & the cosmetic straightening of eyes. Orthoptics treat muscle problems only in regard to strength & do not focus on neurological & visual-motor issues in the comprehensive way in which vision therapy does. Treatment is home based.

Vision Therapy
Vision Therapy is an individualized, supervised, non-surgical treatment program designed to correct eye movements & visual-motor deficiencies. Vision Therapy sessions include procedures designed to enhance the brain is ability to control:

eye alignment,
eye teaming,
eye focusing abilities,
eye movements, and/or
visual processing.
Visual-motor skills & endurance r developed through the use of specialized computer & optical devices, including therapeutic lenses, prisms, & filters. During the final stages of therapy, the patient is newly acquired visual skills r reinforced & made automatic through repetition & by integration with motor & cognitive skills.
While vision therapy includes the eye muscle training methods of orthoptics, it has advanced far beyond it to include training & rehabilitation of the eye-brain connections involved in vision. Clinical & research developments in vision therapy were closely allied with developments in neuroscience during the twentieth century. Research continues in the 21st century.

In vision therapy programs, optometrists look at the neurological control system & thus r treating the whole visual-motor system & altering reflexive behavior, which results in a lasting cure. Also, most optometrists rely on office based therapy, which they believe is more accurately performed & monitored.

Vision Therapy for strabismus generally consists of either weekly or bi-weekly office based therapy. Some doctors reinforce in-office therapy with home therapy. This is based upon a case-by-case determination. Milder intermittent cases may be handled with home therapy. Older children r generally more cooperative & thus obtain a greater benefit from therapy.

No, l can not fix it, but a properly trained eye surgeon probably could, by slightly shortening some of the various muscles controlling the affected eye.

l believe that it is possible to fix being cross-eyed, but, not sure.. since l am not a surgeon, however, with all the advances being made in medical science, l do not know why they couldn't.

l was crossed eyed as a child. l had my surgery when l was 4yrs old. l do not have any crossed eye(seeing double) problems anymore.
