Ok, l had my eyes tested today. l had to look at letters etc, a green and red tape, to see which circles stood out more and had lights shined in my eye, the usual, anyway l used the brand spec-savers. l thought they were good and co-operative. They came back with the results, so l have a few questions:
1. What does longsighted mean? 2. When will l have to use my glasses? 3. Would they give me glasses for no reason? (just to make money)
Thanks.

1) long sighted means you find it hard to focus on things that are close to you 2) you would have to use glasses for reading and close work 3) they would not give you glasses for no reason but l don;t think you have to wear them all the time

Why did not you ask them when you were there?

Long sighted means you can see things really far away but wont see things as good when they are up close. You will need your glasses for things like reading. l do not think they do that, because wearing glasses when you do not need them make your eyes worse.

You need glasses for close up work like reading
If you can see to read and focus on objects close to you then do not bother with glasses yet.
You can try glasses for near-sight in most chemists if you want to see if they make a difference before you buy some.
Just ask your optician for a copy of your prescription and try glasses with the same prescription in the chemists. (probably something like +1.0)

Long-sighted means that you can see things well that are far away, but not things that are really close - so you will be okay in normal day-to-day life, but things like reading or sewing will probably require glasses.

no honey, they would not do it to make money, they would simply give you an honest appraisal of your eyesight after an honest test. if they tell you to wear the glasses then please wear them, they are trying to help you.

1. You have some blurring when looking at things close up but no problem with distance
2. Close work
3. No

im not sure about your 1+2 questions but l can answer question 3. Im sure they wouldnt sell you glasses for no reason, People that test your eyes care about you and your eyes and wouldnt want to give you glases when not needed, which could hurt your eyes

1. condition of the eyes where distant objects; but not close ones; can be seen clearly
2. When you watch tv, maybe reading the board at school, reading books.
3. No. lol.

longsighted where you can not see things clearly close to you as it goes a bit blurry. l mean you'd probably only need them for watching tv and reading plus they help you read faster. They should not give you glasses for no reason if you're not sure about spec-savers go to boots or another opticians for a second opinion.

1. It is called farsighted and you can not see to read. 2. When you read. 3. Really dumb question.

It would be useful if u stated what ur prescription was as well as the uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) & best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). With those numbers, it is generally easier to advise on the extent to which u r longsighted & how good ur vision with & without glasses is. This will give a better indication of when & how u should wear ur glasses.
If l may make make a few comments to some of the above :
A 'professional' optician is by default never there to make money or advise incorrectly? The number of people who have been advised by their opticians to wear glasses at -0.50D or +0.50D, especially kids who have no requirement for them is astounding. Harold Shipman was an exceptionally professional doctor - ask his patients relatives. The reason for such stringent health & safety laws from the Health Care Commission etc is because of unscrupulous 'professional' practitioners. Pick up a copy of Optician Magazine to see how many r on the take, especially from NHS freebies which would apply based on this age.

First..they would never give you glasses just for the money of it..that would be fraud and malpractice and they could be sued. Farsightedness..or hyperopia means that you can see better at a distance than up close..tho that depends on the rx..chances are if this is your 1st pr..than your prescription isnt too much..so youll probably need them when trying to see clearly fom 5 inches to 36 inches..theyll prevent eyestrain and headaches so wear them for all close work.

l will support FMJ.
Longsighted means ur eyes have a little less focusing power then the nominal ideal. Unlike short-sight, where a refraction error leads almost instantly to a noticeable distance blur, a small to moderate longsighted Rx may not cause any blur at all because u have a mechanism in the eye to make it optically stronger. It is what u do every time u do close-work. So when u r on the computer, reading, writing, ur eyes r working harder than the average, & u r having to put a little effort (usually unconsciously) into distance vision. *If the eyes r happy to do this without complaint or fatigue, the Rx is not necessary*.
This varies from person to person & cannot simply be deduced from the size of the Rx. You do not *have* to wear the glasses at all. They may be *useful* for prolonged closework. Or a complete waste of money. That should have been discussed at the examination.
And l have seen at least hundreds of people who have been given low +ve prescriptions that they did not need, & it is difficult to conclude other than that it was done for the benefit of the prescriber is practice rather than the person.
Do not misunderstand: *some* very small prescriptions can be very valuable. It depends on the individual: age, job requirements, binocular vision balance & flexibility.

For answer one and two the other respondants are correct. l will tell you what l tell my patients, glasses are only to help you see. They have no bearing on the health of your eyes. they can not make your eyes better or worse. So if you were doing well the brand you were wearing and do not feel that there is a significant difference between the two then were the ones you can afford.

Longsighted means that you will have trouble seeing up close, like reading papers, magazines, or such.
You may use them for general use, if you wish.
No, they will give you glasses if you need them

Ok longsighted is hypermetropia. It means that light from a distance focuses behind ur retina & not on it. & the closer the object is the further it focuses behind the retina. Wish l could draw u a diagram. At ur age the Crystalline lens, the lens inside ur eye can compensate up to a about +4 dioptres at distance but as u try to read that goes up to about +8 dioptres. So u may have problems reading. Without knowing ur RX l can not really advise you. Use ur spectacles when u wish to see clearly. Spectacles DO NOT make ur eyesight worse & no optometrist would prescribe them without good reason. If u can send me a copy of ur RX (prescription|) l can give u a better answer. Philip FBDO
